How do you get a B2B brand cited by ChatGPT?
A B2B brand gets cited by ChatGPT when OpenAI's search crawler can read its pages, each page answers a buyer's question in its first two sentences, and the brand appears on the third-party pages ChatGPT reads. In our panel of 104 ChatGPT answers to 26 industrial marketing questions, ChatGPT cited at least one source every time, and its most cited sources were agency sites with sector pages and agency-written lists, with fifthring.com in 19 answers and sellwithmarketing.com in 16 (source: Renaissance panel, runs of 9 and 12 October 2026).

What does ChatGPT need before it can cite a page?
It needs to be allowed in. OpenAI states that any public website can appear in ChatGPT search, and that a site wanting its content in summaries and snippets should not block its OAI-SearchBot crawler in robots.txt (source: OpenAI, publishers and developers FAQ, read 19 October 2026). The same page says ChatGPT adds utm_source=chatgpt.com to the links it sends, so visits from ChatGPT appear in analytics.
Google's AI Overviews and AI Mode follow a plainer rule. A page must be indexed and eligible to show in Google Search with a snippet, and Google lists no extra technical requirements, special markup or AI text files (source: Google Search Central, AI features and your website, page updated 10 December 2025). Meeting the requirements does not guarantee a page is crawled, indexed or shown, so crawl access is the first check and the last one to repeat.
What does ChatGPT cite for industrial B2B questions?
It cites marketing firms, mostly through their sector pages and rankings. We asked ChatGPT with web search forced on 26 industrial marketing questions, twice on 9 October and twice on 12 October 2026, and received 104 answers with 303 different sites cited (source: Renaissance panel, runs of 9 and 12 October 2026). Only 9 of the 104 answers cited YouTube, LinkedIn or Reddit.
| Source | Answers citing it | Share of 104 answers |
|---|---|---|
| fifthring.com | 19 | 18% |
| sellwithmarketing.com | 16 | 15% |
| gorilla76.com | 12 | 12% |
| rhblake.com | 11 | 11% |
| motion-marketing.com | 10 | 10% |
| trewmarketing.com | 10 | 10% |
The five pages cited most across all five engines in the same panel were three agency-written “best agencies” lists for manufacturing and two agency pages that name manufacturing in the address. The full breakdown by engine is in which sources AI engines cite for industrial marketing questions.
What are the steps?
1. Publish the facts about the company once, on one page
Engines must decide which company a page describes, and that decision fails when names collide. Our branded checks show it: engines described Renaissance Group correctly in 30 of 38 answers on 12 October 2026 and 34 of 40 on 9 October (source: Renaissance panel, branded questions). The recorded misses include answers that led with a different firm of a similar name or with our former name, FrogIdeas. Renaissance states its founding year (2013) and its offer in the same words on its about page and in llms.txt, so an engine has one description to quote.
2. Write one page per buyer question and put the answer first
Name the sector and the question in the title and the address, then answer in the first two sentences. The most cited pages in our panel name a sector in the address: manufacturing in all five. Renaissance's sector pages follow that pattern, for example marketing for energy technology companies.
3. Earn a place on the lists engines read
17% of the 3,791 citations in our panel, across all five engines, point to a list-style URL, and the most cited page overall is an agency's own “best manufacturing marketing agencies” ranking (source: Renaissance panel, runs of 9 and 12 October 2026). A brand earns a place by giving the author evidence: named clients on the record, a measured result, a quote the client approved. A brand that publishes its own list should print the method and a disclosure line.
4. Be present on the platform each engine reads
Google AI Overviews cited YouTube in 51 of 102 answers, Perplexity cited LinkedIn in 32 of 104 and Google AI Mode cited Reddit in 18 of 104 (source: Renaissance panel, runs of 9 and 12 October 2026). ChatGPT cited those three platforms in 9 of 104, so for ChatGPT the first three steps carry more weight. Renaissance's Platforms practice runs LinkedIn, Reddit, YouTube, X and Instagram for employer brand.
5. Check access again after every site change
Open robots.txt, confirm OAI-SearchBot and Googlebot are allowed, and confirm the pages return a normal status. Add the pages to the sitemap with a current last-modified date.
What should you measure?
Fix a list of buyer questions, ask the same engines the same questions every week, and count the answers that cite your domain. Our panel runs 26 industrial marketing questions through five engines with two samples each, and the run of 720 question samples on 12 October 2026 cost $1.57 in capture fees (source: Renaissance spend ledger).
Our own baseline is low: renaissancegroup.io was cited in 5 of 518 answers, all on one question and all through the homepage (source: Renaissance panel, runs of 9 and 12 October 2026). The target for the pages above is to appear on the questions they answer. Visits show in analytics with utm_source=chatgpt.com when ChatGPT sends them.
What are the limits?
A citation shows that an engine used a page. It does not show that the engine recommended the firm, and the answer text can describe the firm wrongly. Our panel is one market, two runs and two samples per question, so a single week proves little. Google states that meeting its requirements does not guarantee a page is shown, and OpenAI's FAQ gives no placement promise or timeline. Treat the five steps as the work that makes a citation possible, and measure weekly to see which steps moved the count.
Questions buyers ask
How do I get my B2B company cited by ChatGPT?
Let OAI-SearchBot crawl the site, publish one page per buyer question with the answer in the first two sentences, appear on the third-party lists ChatGPT reads, and keep company facts consistent across pages (source: OpenAI, publishers and developers FAQ; Renaissance panel, 9 and 12 October 2026).
Do I need llms.txt to be cited?
No source we read requires it. Google states that AI features need no AI text files or special markup (source: Google Search Central, page updated 10 December 2025), and OpenAI points publishers to robots.txt and the OAI-SearchBot crawler (source: OpenAI, publishers and developers FAQ, read 19 October 2026).
