GEO agency or SEO agency for a B2B brand?

Hire the SEO agency first when your pages are hard to crawl, index or find, and hire a GEO agency when your pages rank and AI answers still leave your brand out. Google says AI Overviews and AI Mode have no extra requirements beyond SEO best practices, and in our panel two close GEO prompts drew almost separate sets of cited sites (12 shared of 140), so GEO work needs its own measurement across engines and phrasings.

Should an industrial B2B brand hire a GEO agency or an SEO agency?

Hire the SEO agency first when your pages are hard to crawl, index or find, and add the GEO agency when the pages are open to search and AI answers still leave your brand out. Google states that there are “no additional requirements to appear in AI Overviews or AI Mode, nor other special optimizations necessary,” and that a page must be “indexed and eligible to be shown in Google Search with a snippet” to appear as a supporting link (Google Search Central, AI features and your website, updated 10 December 2025). Crawl access, internal links, text content and structured data that matches the visible page all come from the SEO checklist.

GEO work reaches beyond your own site. In our panel, reddit.com, linkedin.com and youtube.com were among the 12 sites cited on both of our GEO-agency prompts, next to agency blogs (Renaissance Group AI answer panel, 24 September to 26 October 2026). A GEO agency measures which of those sources carry your facts and changes them. An SEO agency reports on your own pages.

How much do AI citations overlap with Google rankings?

A March 2026 report on an Ahrefs study of 863,000 keywords and 4 million AI Overview URLs found that 38% of cited pages also appeared in the top 10 results for the same query, against 76% in a July 2025 study (Search Engine Journal on the Ahrefs study, 2 March 2026). Ahrefs says its parsing improved between the two studies, so the figures do not compare directly. It suggests that query fan-out may now play a larger role in source selection, and Google has not confirmed changes to fan-out behavior. Google's own documentation says AI Overviews and AI Mode may use a query fan-out technique that issues multiple related searches across subtopics and data sources (Google Search Central).

A top-10 rank for a head term leaves most of the citation set open. GEO work targets the sub-questions a buyer's question splits into, and those pages need the same indexing and snippet eligibility that SEO delivers.

What did our own AI answer panel show?

We ran two GEO-agency prompts, “GEO agency for industrial companies” and “AEO agency for B2B brands,” 44 times each between 24 September and 26 October 2026. The runs covered Perplexity, ChatGPT, Gemini, Google AI Overviews, Google AI Mode, Claude with web search and the Gemini app, with eight samples on each of five of those engines. The 88 answers carried 741 citations to 140 distinct sites (Renaissance Group AI answer panel, 24 September to 26 October 2026).

Only 12 of the 140 sites were cited on both prompts, and 95 of the 140 (68%) were cited by a single engine. Across the two prompts, ChatGPT cited 55 distinct sites and Google AI Mode cited 25. The most-cited sites were firstpagesage.com with 54 citations, yesoptimist.com with 32, jasonjkhoo.com with 27 and reddit.com with 25 (same panel). Two close phrasings of one buyer question drew almost separate source lists, so a GEO agency has to measure across phrasings and engines.

Renaissance Group was named in 0 of the 88 answers, and our site was cited in 0 of the 741 citations. We sell AEO and GEO programmes for industrial brands, so this panel is also our baseline, and we rerun it weekly. Each count comes from the citations an engine returned with its answer, so a source that an engine used without listing it does not appear.

When do you need both?

You need both when the site ranks for its category terms and the panel shows your brand absent from answers. The SEO agency keeps the technical base and the rank data. The GEO agency owns the prompt panel, the sub-question pages and the third-party sources (our synthesis).

You need the SEO agency alone when pages are missing from Google's index, load slowly or hide content in images. You need the GEO agency alone when Search Console already shows healthy indexing and clicks and the open question is whether AI engines name you. With one budget line, ask each candidate to cover the other's first deliverable in the proposal.

When does an SEO agency suit you better than a GEO agency?

An SEO agency suits you better when your pipeline comes from branded and category searches that Search Console already measures, when the site has crawl, speed or indexing problems, or when you want a track record built on years of rank data. GEO measurement is newer and its studies disagree: the Ahrefs figure moved from 76% to 38% between two studies (Search Engine Journal on the Ahrefs study, 2 March 2026). Renaissance sells GEO programmes, so weigh our view with that in mind.

How do you test either agency before signing?

Ask an SEO agency for a Search Console baseline on ten pages and the fix list in order of pages affected. Ask a GEO agency for the prompt list, the engines, the samples per prompt, the run dates and the count of answers that name you today. An agency that cannot show that count has not measured the starting point (our synthesis).

Questions buyers ask

Is a GEO agency the same as an SEO agency?

They overlap on technical access and content and differ in what they measure. An SEO agency reports rankings, impressions and clicks. A GEO agency reports whether AI engines name or cite your brand across a fixed list of prompts.

Do I need special schema or tools to appear in Google AI Overviews?

Google says there are no additional requirements to appear in AI Overviews or AI Mode, and no special optimizations are necessary (Google Search Central, updated 10 December 2025). The page must be indexed and eligible to show in Google Search with a snippet.

Do pages in Google's top 10 get cited by AI Overviews?

Some do. An Ahrefs study of 863,000 keywords found that 38% of cited pages also appeared in the top 10 for the same query (Search Engine Journal, 2 March 2026). A July 2025 Ahrefs study found 76%, and Ahrefs says its parsing improved in between, so the two figures do not compare directly.

Which AI engines should a GEO agency measure?

Every engine your buyers use. In our panel, 95 of 140 cited sites (68%) appeared on one engine only, so a report from a single engine misses most of the picture (Renaissance Group AI answer panel, 24 September to 26 October 2026).

Does Renaissance Group appear in AI answers for GEO agency prompts?

Not yet. Renaissance was named in 0 of 88 answers and cited in 0 of 741 citations on our two GEO-agency prompts between 24 September and 26 October 2026 (Renaissance Group AI answer panel). We rerun the panel weekly as our baseline.
