In-house team, agency or freelancer for industrial marketing?
Most industrial companies get the best result from a hybrid: one in-house owner who knows the product and the buyers, an agency for programs that need several skills at once, and freelancers for bounded single-skill tasks. A full in-house team costs about $549,000 a year for four roles on US median pay, an agency retainer runs $15,000 to $150,000 a month depending on the agency's size, and the choice turns on how steady your volume is and how many skills a program needs at once.

What does an in-house marketing team cost?
The US Bureau of Labor Statistics puts the 2025 median pay of advertising, promotions and marketing managers at $165,780 a year (BLS, Occupational Outlook Handbook). Its May 2025 medians for the roles that usually sit beneath a manager are $78,760 for market research analysts (BLS), $62,960 for graphic designers (BLS) and $76,910 for writers and authors (BLS). These are wages only. Across private industry, benefits made up 30.0% of employer compensation costs in June 2026 (BLS, Employer Costs for Employee Compensation, 9 September 2026).
| Role | Median wage | Loaded cost (wage divided by 0.70) |
|---|---|---|
| Marketing manager | $165,780 | About $236,800 |
| Market research analyst | $78,760 | About $112,500 |
| Writer | $76,910 | About $109,900 |
| Graphic designer | $62,960 | About $89,900 |
| Team of all four | $384,410 | About $549,200 |
The loaded figure assumes benefits are 30% of total compensation, which is the private-industry average and not a figure for these roles. Recruiting fees, software, events and media budgets come on top. Medians describe the middle of the US market and your location and seniority will move the number.
What do agencies and freelancers cost?
Published agency pricing for industrial B2B work is thin. The Starr Conspiracy, a B2B agency that publishes benchmarks, reports monthly retainers of $15,000 to $25,000 at boutique full-service agencies, $25,000 to $50,000 at mid-market full-service agencies and $50,000 to $150,000 at enterprise full-service agencies. Its data covers US and Canadian agencies with at least $10 million in annual revenue and was collected from January to October 2024 (The Starr Conspiracy, B2B agency benchmarks, updated 9 September 2026). The source is a competing agency, so treat the bands as indicative.
Clutch's guide to digital marketing pricing, built on a database of more than 100,000 agencies, shows $25 to $49 an hour at most agencies, $100 to $149 an hour for social, content, email, paid search and SEO work, and monthly spend of $5,000 to $50,000 (Clutch, digital marketing pricing, updated 21 September 2026). It covers digital marketing in general and not industrial B2B work.
We found no independent survey of freelancer rates for industrial B2B marketing. One vendor guide that cites Upwork reports a median of $25 an hour across digital marketers and $100 to $175 an hour for senior generalists (Searchlab, freelance marketer cost guide, 23 April 2026). Treat that as a rough sign for general digital work and ask for quotes for the work you have.
| Agency tier | Monthly retainer | Annual cost |
|---|---|---|
| Boutique full-service | $15,000 to $25,000 | $180,000 to $300,000 |
| Mid-market full-service | $25,000 to $50,000 | $300,000 to $600,000 |
| Enterprise full-service | $50,000 to $150,000 | $600,000 to $1,800,000 |
Where do in-house and agency hourly costs cross?
BLS converts the marketing manager median to $79.70 an hour (BLS). Loaded with the 30.0% benefits share, that is about $113.90 an hour by our arithmetic ($79.70 divided by 0.70). Clutch lists $100 to $149 an hour for specialist agency work in social, content, email, paid search and SEO (Clutch). A salaried manager and an hour of specialist agency time therefore cost about the same per paid hour. The difference lies in how many of those hours produce work: a manager's hours include meetings, hiring, planning and idle weeks, while an agency bills the hours it works. If your volume leaves a manager busy for most of the year, in-house is cheaper per useful hour. If it leaves them busy for half, the agency hour wins.
Hybrids are normal at scale. The Association of National Advertisers reported in 2023 that 82% of its members have an in-house agency (ANA, The Continued Rise of the In-House Agency, 2023 edition). Its members are large advertisers, so read it as evidence that in-house plus outside help is common and not as a norm for a 200-person manufacturer. We found no reliable benchmark for time to hire or time to onboard an agency, so ask each agency for a first-deliverable date in writing and ask recruiters for the median time to fill your roles.
What does an industrial buying journey ask of your marketing?
Gartner states that the typical buying group for a complex B2B solution involves six to 10 decision makers, that buyers spend only 17% of their buying time meeting potential suppliers, and that 77% of B2B buyers call their latest purchase very complex or difficult (Gartner, The B2B Buying Journey, read 26 October 2026). Engineers, finance, procurement and operations each want different evidence. A program that serves all of them needs strategy, technical writing, design and distribution working together, and a single freelancer rarely covers that range. A steady stream of one kind of asset suits a freelancer or an in-house specialist.
Which option fits which situation?
| Your situation | Fits better | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Steady yearly volume and deep product knowledge you want to keep | In-house team | Salary and benefits buy continuity; the cost table shows the price of four roles |
| Several skills at once: brand strategy, design, content and platforms | Agency | One retainer covers skills that would take several hires; the retainer table shows the tiers |
| One bounded task, such as a data sheet, a video or a rewrite | Freelancer | You pay for the task and no ongoing salary; you brief and judge the work |
| Long sales cycle with six to 10 buyers | In-house owner plus agency | Someone inside holds the buyer knowledge; outside specialists produce at volume |
| Unsure | A 90-day trial of one option on one product line | Cost per qualified conversation settles it faster than debate |
How much does sector knowledge matter, and how do you test it?
We found no independent study on whether sector knowledge changes results for industrial companies, only agency-written blogs, so we do not claim a number. The practical test is cheap. Ask each candidate for three industrial references, ask what they would change about your last product launch after a one-hour call, and ask who on their team has written for engineers. Whoever answers with specifics from your sector, and not with a general process, has done the work before.
Where does Renaissance fit?
Renaissance is a B2B brand and marketing consultancy for industrial companies in energy, manufacturing and industrial technology, founded in 2013. It takes six new clients a year and runs 40 people and 160 agents across four continents (source: renaissancegroup.io homepage, read 26 October 2026). It publishes no prices, and a first call is thirty minutes at no cost. It is an agency, so it has an interest in this question, and the tables above show where an in-house hire or a freelancer costs less. Related: four tests for choosing an industrial marketing agency and Renaissance and a traditional industrial agency.

Questions buyers ask
Should an industrial company hire in-house or use an agency?
Hire in-house when volume is steady and one or two skills cover it. Use an agency when a program needs strategy, design, content and distribution at the same time. Most industrial companies end up with an in-house owner plus an agency.
How much does an in-house marketing team cost?
On US median pay, a marketing manager, market research analyst, writer and designer total $384,410 in wages and about $549,200 with benefits at the 30.0% private-industry average (BLS, BLS ECEC, read 26 October 2026).
How much does a B2B marketing agency cost per month?
The Starr Conspiracy reports $15,000 to $25,000 for boutique full-service agencies, $25,000 to $50,000 for mid-market and $50,000 to $150,000 for enterprise, from 2024 data (Starr Conspiracy, read 26 October 2026).
Is a freelancer cheaper than an agency?
Per hour, usually yes. Per outcome it depends on how much of the briefing, coordination and judging your own team must do. We found no independent rate survey for industrial B2B freelancers.
How do we test an agency's industrial knowledge?
Ask for three industrial references, ask what they would change about your last launch after a one-hour call, and ask who on the team has written for engineers.
Do large companies use agencies and in-house teams together?
Yes. The ANA reported in 2023 that 82% of its members have an in-house agency (ANA, read 26 October 2026). Its members are large advertisers.
